Abstract


This classroom action research was conducted to increase students’ ability incomprehending Sociolinguistics through the use of Read-Encode-Annotate-Ponder (REAP)strategy. The subjects were the fifth semester students taking sociolinguistics. Before thetreatment was conducted, a pretest was administered and a post-test was also held at the endof the treatment. The REAP strategy consists of four steps: 1) Read to discover the author’sidea, 2) Encode the author’s idea, 3) Annotate the ideas in writing, 4) Ponder the significanceof the message. From the two cycles applied, there was an increase of the mean score fromthe pre-test (60.32) to the mean score of the first cycle (65.42) which still did not achieve thestandard competency applied. In addition, the result of the observation of the actionindicated the number of the students who followed the activity, was not satisfactory(r4o,o). On the other hand, the mean score after the second cycle (73.78) was higherthan the standard competency t-test was also used to see the effectiveness of REAPstrategy. The result showed that the value of 't table at the levels of significance of 0.5(2.02) and 0.1 (2.71) is smaller than the 't' observed value (5.54). This means that theuse of REAP strategy is very effective in increasing students' ability in comprehendingthe content subject Sociolinguistics.
