Abstract
The main problem which encourages the researcher to conduct the action research
is the low competence in writing personal experience of the seventh year students of SMAN 7
Pekanbaru. To overcome the problem, the researcher applied Stage Exercise Patterns – a
teaching writing technique which covers three crucial stages, namely: the stage of teaching
constructing sentences, the stage of teaching developing paragraph, and the stage of teaching
writing discourse. The action applied in two cycles shows that the Stage Exercise Pattern can
increase the students’ competence in writing personal experience and the teacher’s capability
in teaching writing. The students’ improving writing can be seen from the increased capability
in: (1) determining experiential topics; (2) spelling and punctuation; (3) diction; (4) sentence
structure; (5) paragraph organization; (6) paragraph unity; (7) coherence among sentence I a
paragraphs; and (8) coherence among the paragraphs. The indicators showing the improvement
are: (1) variations in experiential topics written by the students, (2) laser mistakes made by the
students in writing based on the criteria determined by the teacher from stage to stage and from
cycle to cycle; (3) the average score of cycle 1 is 65,25 while the average score of cycle 2 is
73,63. Consequently, the average score is increased, that is 8,08. While the increase of the
teacher’s capability in teaching can be seen from the improvement in: (1) integrating the teaching
writing with other aspects, (2) applying various teaching strategies, (3) creating and making use
of the teaching media.
